Living a Sedentary Life
Life these days are just
too good. Technology and an abundant society require very little physical effort
to survive. I was thinking back to approximately 25 years ago, and how our
lifestyles have changed. Back then how many people took care of their own lawn,
cleaned their own homes, or did their own home repairs? This all required some
form of physical activity. It didn't make us athletes, but it got us off our
butts.
These days those chores are relegated to others so we have more time to sit. Sit at a desk, sit in a car, sit in front of a computer or television, and sit in a movie theatre or a restaurant. Think about your waking hours and how much of that is spent sitting? Kind of scary!
Our grandparents didn't need to go to health clubs or buy fitness equipment because often their jobs keep them active. My grandfather use to tell me how he walked 10 miles to school in a blizzard without and shoes, of course he would smile afterwards.
Ever since that damn industrial revolution we are finding less and less need to get physical. We'll there is still one activity that requires us to be physical, but we won't get into that.
Whatever happened to Survival of the Fitness? Or does that only happen on reality TV?
So spring is in the air, or least in North Carolina and maybe it is time for some spring/summer resolutions. I know these are suppose to be New Year's resolutions, but in the winter everyone is wearing heavy clothes and you can't tell if they've been working out. It's a simple resolution - GET OFF YOUR BUTT! This resolution can be fulfilled through a variety of activities.
Now you can take it to the extreme and decide you are going to start competing in triathlons or ultra-marathons. But that may not be for everyone. So I am going to recommend one of the best forms of exercise, even for those who are already committed to a regular workout, and that is walking. Until the invention of the automobile, walking was in vogue. It is a major reason we have two legs, rather then wings or fins.
Although I workout every day, I am making a commitment to walk. I've decided after work I am going to start taking daily walks with the dog. I'm sure he'll hate that. And on the weekends I'll walk the trail around the reservoir. The results will be more cardio exercise, which can never hurt, and the opportunity to unwind and absorb. When you walk you actually experience your surroundings, rather then having them flashing past you at 70 mph. What a novel idea.
The simple fact is every time I take a leisurely walk I feel better. It takes the edge off. And what makes walking ideal is you can do it anywhere. You can walk the city, suburbs or the country. I was just in Boston for the first time and I walked the Freedom Trial. Except for being 15 degrees, it was exhilarating. And don't forget you can walk at home on a treadmill and watch your favorite television program (Shameless plug, sorry).
So as the snow melts and
the daffodils begin to pop, do your body a favor and get out and walk.
Have a
healthy and prosperous life.
